How to Layer Necklaces: The Universal Jewels Guide

Layering necklaces is the easiest way to take a basic outfit and make it feel intentional. But done wrong, it's a tangle by lunch. Done right, it's the wearable signature you're known for. Here's how we think about it.

The length rule: 2 inches apart, minimum

The single most important rule of layering: each chain should be at least 2 inches longer than the one above it. Anything closer and the chains catch on each other constantly.

A reliable stack:

  • 14 inch choker — sits at the base of the throat
  • 16 inch necklace — sits at the collarbone
  • 18 inch necklace — sits just below
  • 20 inch necklace — sits at the top of the chest
  • 24 inch necklace — sits mid-chest, often with a pendant

You can drop any one of these without breaking the stack. A 16 + 20 with a pendant is our most-popular two-chain combination.

Mix textures, not metals (mostly)

The texture of a chain matters more than the metal. A flat paperclip + a round box chain + a curb chain reads as deliberate even in the same metal. Three identical chains in different sizes? It reads as one chain in three sizes.

Yellow + white gold mixing is back — and it's been back for a while. Don't be afraid of it. The trick is balance: one dominant metal, one accent. All-silver and all-yellow are also strong looks, just less editorial.

The pendant rule: one statement, max

Two pendant necklaces in a stack starts to feel busy. One pendant is the focal point; the other chains support it. If you want two pendants, make sure one is dramatically smaller than the other (a tiny initial on a 16" + a statement medal on a 24", for example).

Our most-asked layering stacks

The Everyday Edit

  • Sterling Silver 16" Paperclip Chain
  • Sterling Silver 18" Box Chain with a small initial pendant
  • Sterling Silver 22" Tennis CZ chain

The Faith Stack

  • 14K Gold 16" Box Chain (alone)
  • 14K Gold 20" with a Saint Christopher or Miraculous Medal pendant

The Statement Stack

  • 14K Gold 18" Paperclip
  • 14K Gold 22" with a Cross or Initial pendant
  • Sterling Silver 24" Tennis CZ chain for contrast

Two practical things

Use a chain detangler clasp if you wear two pendants at once. They're a $10 add that solves 90% of tangling.

Take them off in the same order every night. Put the longest on the bottom of your jewelry tray, shortest on top. You'll thank yourself in the morning.
